I have a bit of a girly crush on new Labour MP Jacinda Ardern.

Because TV3 is all copyright concerned, i can't embed the video, but watch her interview with Oliver Driver (mmm Oliver) here.

Think she could have done with some lipstick - i'm no lipstick girl myself but she looked a tad washed out...like the top though. Nice and cheerful in these doom and gloom times.

Her view that Opposition parties need to know when to celebrate positive changes made by the Party in Government was a refreshing change from the norm. Before the election i got pretty sick of constantly hearing that everything that anyone did was wrong, and bad, and that we're all worse off because of so and so's idea.

Here's some more, just cos i can't get enough...the tailored suit is a good look on her - a nice contrast to the masses of fabric worn by the likes of Annette King and Ruth Dyson. The little brooch on her lapel is cute too...very 40's. Hopefully she'll continue to make good clothing choices so i can gush over her some more.

Oh here's another one. Ugh I hate Paul Henry. So rude, and not in a funny way like Oliver Driver. I'll leave Paul to gush over Nikki Kaye. She does have good balance with her choice of suit/top/necklace. Keep an eye on that one, too.

I'm rather looking forward to the House being back in session next week - yay!

  1. What an interesting blog you have here, Polly. I agree that Cindy Ardern is a very classy dresser. She's articualte and carries herself well on TV. She's got a very cultured voice, although one unkind neighbour saw her on the teev and said she was trying to become Helen Clark Mark II.

I think it under-rates Cindy's talents to refer to her just in fashion terms however. She's obviously a rising star in the Labour Party, although she was given a safe National seat where she could cut her teeth. Compare to Nikki Kaye, who you manage to disparage, who fought hard to win the nomination for a safe Labour seat and managed to beat the long-standing incumbent.

I don't know if Paul Henry did gush over Nikki Kaye, but if he did it was deserved. Kaye is a proven performer. Cindy has a lot of potential, but it's so far unproven. Making snarky comparisons about Kaye just makes you look like that silly Sylvia Giles girl, who seemed to be obsessed with Kaye in the last campaign.

  2. Indeed, I agree with you wholeheartedly -the talents of both are well in excess of their clothing choices. However I do think that many an average person assesses public figures on what they wear first and foremost, and what they say second. So that's how i'm approaching it - let's hook people in to discussion by looking at what MPs are wearing, and how they use that to portray themselves to the public.

Politics is so much about spin these days - and dress is as much a part of that as anything else.

As for not saying more about Nikki Kaye - i don't know enough about her yet to consider myself qualified to make comment. I welcome education!
